Sports University Conquers Iceland
Sports University has returned back to the United States after a
successful campaign in Iceland against the finest Youth Basketball Teams
Iceland has to offer April 17-23.
Upon there arrival in Iceland on April 17th they were escorted by Ken Webb
Head Coach of the Skallagrimur Express to Borganes Iceland which would be
the primary location for the 1st annual tournament. As a tune-up game we
played a team from Reykjavik the Capital of Iceland. This team called
FJOINIR was comprised of 19 and 20yr olds. It was an excellent tune-up for
us with us beating them by a final score of 81-77 Kyrie Irving set the
tone for things to come with 29 points and John Caprio chipped in with 14.
On Saturday we started the official tourney.
We knew it was important to pace our selves with 3 games in front of us
for the day. Our 1st game of the tournament was against the 18 yr olds of
the FJOINIR team once again our leading scorer was Kyrie Irving with 28
pts and Angelo Mangiro the 6”4 280 man-child chipping in 16 points for a
72-66 win. Our 2nd game of the day was against Tindasoll John Caprio of
Seton Hall Prep led the way with 17 points and Lucky Jones of St Anthony
providing supports with 12 pts for a 65-52 victory. Our 3rd game of the
day was against the home team Skallagrimur John Caprio of SHP was brillant
hitting key baskets in a 12-0 unanswered point run by Sports U for a 69-49
romp.
On Sunday we played the playoff round we started with Tindasoll we felt it
was best to rest most of our starters for the Championship game later in
the day and other players really stepped up Keir Gist led the way with 18
pts and Chris Cafiero set the pace at point guard with 13 pts. The
Championship game was all Sports U. Kyrie Irving went ballistic with 35
pts, Chris Compass dominated inside with 22pts and an alley opp off the
backboard pass form Kyrie Irving that literally sent the fans into a state
of delirium.
This experience was unbelievable to all of us. The natural beauty of
Iceland is breathtaking. The people are warm and open. They treated us
like Kings. Next years tournament promises to be even bigger with teams
coming in from all over Europe . Darryl Dawkins and Ed Bright meet with
City Officials Mayor, town manger etc and they ecstatic about how the
participation of everyone, sponsors, fans and teams had far exceeded
everyone’s expectations.
Sports University wants to also take the time to thank their sponsors. Old
